The Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviet Union built up missiles in Cuba and in 1962 the United States demanded removal of the missiles and formed a naval blockade around Cuba. The Soviets withdrew the missiles, and the United States promised not to invade Cuba. The Cuban economy was left dependent on Soviet support.

Iranian nationalists overthrew Shah Pahlavi and ceased British oil company. The United States restored the Shah to power, fearing Soviet invasion.
Shah Pahlavi westernized Iran with United States support. Ayatolla Ruholla Khomeini was the Iranian Muslim leader who lived in exile. In 1978, Khomeini sparked riots in Iran, and the Shah fled.
Islamic revolutionaries held American hostages in Tehran for 444 days. Muslim radicals took control in Iran, increasing tensions with Iraq. Sadam Hussein feared the spread of the Iranian Revolution into Iraq and attacked Iran. Iran and Iraq fought an eight year war. The United States aided both sides, and the Soviets helped Iraq.
